Port Blair, Oct 13: A major protest was witnessed today at the GB Pant Hospital after a man namely Kasim Ali, a resident of Manarghat and a permanent staff of Education Department, died early this morning, after an operation conducted by the Doctors of GB Pant Hospital.
As per reports, nearly 70-80 residents of Manarghat reached at the G B Pant Hospital and started shouting slogans against GB Pant Hospital and the Doctors.
As per the residents of the area and family members of the deceased, Mr Kasim was taken to the Pillar Hospital on last Sunday but from the Pillar Hospital the Doctors referred him to the GB Pant Hospital.
Sources said that the family members of the deceased wanted the patients to be referred to Mainland for specialized care.
But as per family members, even after repeated requests the Doctors didn’t refer Mr Kashim to mainland and the Doctors at G B Pant conducted the operation.
As per family members, something went wrong and Mr Kashim died this morning at around 03:00am.
Fuming over the death, family members of Mr Kashim and the villagers of Manarghat reached the GB Pant Hospital at around 05:00pm and staged a protest against the Hospital authorities.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Pradhan, Manarghat said that till the administration assures them that the GB Pant Hospital will refer the patient if he/she wants to get treatment from any mainland based hospital they will continue the protest.
“This is not the first case from our area, similar cases have been witnessed in past too but the GB Pant Hospital haven’t learnt anything from past mistakes,” the Pradhan Manarghat added.
When contacted the Medical Superintendent, Dr. S.P. Burma said that the patient was not referred to mainland as his condition was not stable after his condition further worsen it was impossible to refer him. “I can’t say more on this without consulting concerned doctors and reading case history of the patient,” Dr. Burma said.
