Port Blair, May 30: The World No Tobacco Day with the theme ‘Tobacco Industry Interference’ will be observed tomorrow in A&N Islands too. The Directorate of Health Services under National Tobacco Control programme will organize various programmes to create awareness among the general public about the ill effects of consumption of cigarette and other tobacco use.
The main function will be held at 10 am on May 31, 2012 at GB Pant Hospital auditorium. Mr. S.N. Chatterjee, Secretary (Law & Jail) will be the chief guest on the occasion.
Tobacco is one of the leading preventable causes of death. The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly six million people each year of which more than six lakhs people are exposed to second hand smoke. Unless we act, it will kill up to 8 million people by 2030, of which more than 80% who lives in low and middle income countries.
