Port Blair, Sept 18: Marking International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16.09.2016, ANCOL ECO CLUB OF ANDAMAN COLLEGE, Port Blair organized various indoor and outdoor events to encourage students to contribute their bit in protecting the ozone layer. The theme for this year is “Ozone and climate: Restored by a world united”. An outreach program was organized at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Environmental Team (ANET), North Wandoor for the students of the college. The team was led by Shri Bency Joy, Faculty and Eco Club Incharge of the college.
Earlier, Academic Incharge of the college, Dr Sushim Kumar Biswas flagged off the team from the college premises. Addressing to the students he stressed on the importance of the observance of the day and also appealed to each student to spread the message to the populace.
At ANET a technical session was conducted by the researchers on the importance of Ozone layer to mankind. Miss Joya through her presentation highlighted that ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, which protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet. The phase-out of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth .A brainstorming session was also conducted which culminated into the presentations made by the students.
Various programs were also conducted for the students at Wandoor Beach. In the Interdepartmental Quiz competition, T Prem Kumar & Team from Psychology Department were declared as the winners. In open house quiz Nitin, I Yr B.A English bagged the prize while the prize for Jingle making was bagged by S Devakar, III Yr BCom. Similarly the prizes for “Tagline writing” and “Sand Sculpturing” were bagged by Wajahat Hussain and the Team comprising of Solomon, Wajahat and Palash from Economics Department. The Ozone trophy which was presented based on the overall performance of the students was lifted by the English Department.
