Port Blair, August 09: Tiring duty hours of more than 10 hours is being a major source of misery for many traffic Jawans. Adding to that, it is alleged that many jawans do not even get a weekly off.
The last Director General of Police had announced that every constable will be given a weekly off but that has not been followed by the lower level officers, it seems.
As per sources, the whole traffic police unit of nearly 90 police constables has been changed with new constables and in that there are many those who are above 40-45 year of age and are unable to keep pace with the job profile of Traffic Police, hence the young police constables in traffic branch are shouldering extra duties.
When contacted the DySP Traffic, Mr Umar refuted this allegation and said that every constable is being given a week off but in rotation basis as there is shortage of staffs in traffic unit.
“The traffic Police constables are paid 13 month salary and there is nothing wrong if they are working 1-2 extra hours,” DySP Traffic added.
The DySP Traffic also said that recently on a sampark sabha it has also been communicated to the constables that those who cannot work at traffic unit, can apply for a transfer but no one is ready for it because they also want to stay in Port Blair.
Contrary to this claim now some constables, who doesn’t want their names to be quoted, alleged that they have requested for transfer in many occasions but they have not being transferred yet.
In a discipline force like Police, it becomes difficult for lower level staffs to communicate the problems. Hence it should be the duty of top most officials to ensure well being of lower level staffs or the constable ranked staffs will be demoralised and that would result in negative output.
