Port Blair, Aug 7: Our Rights Organization (ORO) has demanded re-opening of the Medical Dispensary for the benefit of sanitary workers in the premises of the Port Blair Municipal Council. In a letter to the Lt. Governor, Chairman, ORO, Mr Saravanan said that the sanitary workers of PBMC are suffering because of the absence of any proper medical aids/Kits. “Most of the sanitary workers render services in harsh conditions like collecting waste debris materials and animal/broiler chicken/fish waste, dusts, drainage etc which exposes them to the risk of various diseases like malaria, dengue, chickengunia etc,” said Mr Saravanan.
A medical dispensary was earlier functioning in the premises of the Port Blair Municipal but was later closed for the reasons better known to the authorities. The strength of sanitary workers in the civic body has increased to more than 1500 and the Medical Dispensary has become essential for the proper healthcare of the sanitary workers,” he said urging the Lt. Governor re-open the Medical Dispensary in the premises of the Municipal Council.
