Port Blair, July 28: The National Cadet Corps in Andaman & Nicobar Islands have adopted Namunaghar Village as part of an initiative introduced by the NCC Directorate at New Delhi. An auspicious beginning was made today by organising a ‘Vanmahotsav’ and a ‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’ in the Village.
As part of the Social Service Activity, about sixty NCC Cadets (Army & Navy) of JNRM participated in the activity along with ANOs, PI Staff and Admin staff of the two NCC Units. A small function was organised at the Government Secondary School, Namunaghar to mark the occasion and was presided over by the School’s Principal Dr. Manoramawati as the Chief Guest. The Commanding Officer of NCC, Pradhan, Smti. Pratima Kumari and other Panchayat members of the village were present on the occasion. The school children presented a welcome song and a patriotic song on the occasion. Four NCC cadets spoke on ‘Vanmahotsav’, importance of ‘Tree Plantation’, care & protection of plants and the need to maintain the green cover to counter the ills of urbanization & industrialisation. Shri. Kalaignanam of Army NCC spoke on the medicinal value of plants and their use in maintaining a healthy life style.
The day being the first Anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a two minutes silence was observed to pay respects to the great man. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest welcomed the NCC initiative of adopting the village and hoped that the partnership would bring about the much needed social awareness and contribute towards the overall development of the village. She extended her full support to the cause. The Commanding Officer thanked the Principal and the Panchayat Members for extending their whole hearted support.
The NCC cadets along with the school children of GSS Namunaghar and GPS Dundas Point planted a large number of various saplings (provided by the forest department) in the premises of the two schools. The school staff and a large number of villagers actively participated in the activity. In a thoughtful gesture, the school children had brought material to protect the saplings from goats and cattle. A Swachha Bharat Abhiyaan was conducted in and around both the schools on completion of the tree plantation.The villagers had organised lunch for the cadets and the support staff at the Panchayat Community Hall.
