Port Blair, May 21: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Member of Parliament, Mr. Tarun Vijay, who visited the A&N Islands from 14th to 17th April 2012, while raising issues relating to the A&N Islands through special mentions has lauded the efforts of the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM and the A&N Administration for developmental works in the A&N Islands.
After the unfortunate tsunami in December 2004, the A&N Administration completed 9797 Permanent Houses, 85 School Buildings, 34 Health Centres, 48 Anganwadi Centres, 51.48 MW Power Supply, 210 km plus 137.15 km (new) roads and 53 Jetties. Besides 06 vessels were completed, 2065 fishing boats and 863 fishing gears were distributed, one Fish Landing Centre, 02 Ice Plants & Cold Storage were completed, 7108 Electricity Connections and 61 Electric Transformers were installed, 2300 Pump sets distributed, 613 wells developed and 328.10 hectares of Coastal Belt Plantation Mangrove planted. These works were completed in record time despite adverse weather condition and difficult working environment in the remote Islands.
Among the other issues highlighted by the BJP MP includes more Central help to A&N Islands, erecting a memorial of the revolutionary, Sher Ali Khan, who acted to take revenge against the British Colonial Force and was done to death for killing Lord Mayo. Issues regarding potable water, connectivity between the Islands and the security aspect of the Islands were also raised by him in the Rajya Sabha.
