Mayabunder, May 20: On 27, February 1988 a major fire broke out at Mayabunder Market, which destroyed dozens of shops and caused huge damage to many shop owners.
For the immediate relief the then Assistant Commissioner, N & M Andaman, Mayabunder vide his order No. 3-14(P)/934 dated 12th April 1988 had allotted temporary sites to altogether 45 shopkeepers in another site in Mayabunder which was meant for children’s park.
As per the terms and conditions of the said order the said site was allotted on temporary basis only for six months subject to further extension by the competent authority.
Further it was also stated in the order that no allottee can sub let or sell the said sites without the consent of the signing authority. According to available detail, since that date no extension has been given to the said beneficiaries.
Now it has been found that ignoring the conditions mentioned in the order 50 percent shopkeepers have sold their sites for huge amounts to other parties without the consent or approval of the competent authorities.
Want of a children’s park at Mayabunder is felt for the last 24 years by the general public of Mayabunder but instead of ensuring the existence of the playground, the fire victims have been allowed to sell plots the playground. The authorities concerned should allot proper shopping complex to the actual victims of the fire accident and develop the area again as children’s park.
