Port Blair, Mar 14: Andaman Mahila Congress celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm on March 9, 2016. A colorful shamiana was raised in front of the house of Smt Alima Abbubakar and banners befitting the occasion were fixed at appropriate places.
On arrival, the chief guest, Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Kuldeep Rai Sharma was accorded a warm welcome. Smt Shanta Singh presented a shawl and Smt Pushpanjali Raju offered a flower bouquet. A photograph of his grandmother, Late Jai Devi along with Late Indira Gandhi, when she was active in the affairs of Congress party was also presented to Mr Sharma by the Mahila Congress President.
In her welcome address, Smt Shanta Singh, President, Mahila Congress showered praise on the women participants hailing from various villages and gathered in large number which was more than 350. She said in the present scenario women are, not backward as they are seen in all such field also which were earlier considered to be the operational area of male only. She also spoke about the necessity of formation of Women Commission in the territory. She emphasized on the issue that whenever land / house is allotted to any deserving family it should in variably be allotted in the joint name of wife and husband for peaceful living of the family.
Smt Ratna Kannan, Ex-Chairperson, Social Welfare Board, Smt Pushpanjali Raju, District Vice President, Smti Malti Mandal, Leader Congress Party and Mr Farook Alam, Spokesperson of Congress party spoke on women elated problems and the ill-effects of alcoholism in the society. Mr Abbubakkar, renowned social worker of the area proposed the vote of thanks.
