Port Blair, Oct 4: Hundreds of villagers of Chouldhari took to streets on Saturday to protest against erratic water supply in the region. Led by the Pradhan, Chouldhari, Mr Mohan Halder, the protestors shouted slogans against the Administration and the Andaman Public Works Department for disruption in water supply and contaminated water supply through pipelines.
As the protests gained momentum and agitators planned to block the Andaman Trunk Road, the Sub Divisional Magistrate, South Andaman, Dr Arun Kumar Jha rushed to Chouldhari to persuade the agitators to call off the demonstration. However, none of the top officials of APWD arrived at the scene to address the situation.
“Chouldhari has been long suffering from erratic water supply and the APWD has failed to redress the situation. Moreover, dirty water unfit for human consumption is being supplied to the villagers, who even dreaded to use the water for other purposes. Despite repeated pleas, the APWD continue to shrink away from the responsibility of providing clean potable water in Chouldhari,” said some villagers.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, the Pradhan, Chouldhari, Mr Mohan Halder said that the villagers of Chouldhari have been suffering from supply of inadequate water for long.
Meanwhile it is learnt that a crucial meeting in this regard has been scheduled on 5th October evening.
