Port Blair, June 18: To develop a sense of responsibility among the public on the need for conservation and management of protected areas of A&N Islands, the Department of Environment & Forests is organising a logo competition of Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (MGMNP). The competition is open to all. Interested participants shall send their logo design (in hard and soft copy) based on Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park along with their name, address and contact number, in a sealed cover addressed to the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Division, Mini Zoo, Haddo- 744102 latest by July 10, 2015. Best logo will be branded as logo for National Park and winner will be suitably awarded.
The MGMNP, situated at Wandoor spread over an area of about 281.50 sq. km. is a unique combination of rich and varied forest and marine ecosystems occurring in the tropical region. This Park is a reservoir of a variety of beautiful, diverse and rich fringing coral reefs, sea grass beds, molluscs, jelly fish, sea anemone, sea urchin, reef fishes etc. The emerald blue waters harbours elusive sea cow, the State animal of A&N Islands and sandy beaches in the National Park around make them ideal nesting sites for sea turtles which visit this park in large number during nesting season. The creeks with luxuriant mangrove forest growing in the inter-tidal zone next to the dense tropical forests provide home to salt water crocodile. The primary objective of MGMNP is to conserve the natural and cultural resources and their ecological relationship, by according complete protection to the breeding and feeding grounds of rare; endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna in the labyrinth group of Islands.
