Port Blair, June 9: Following the directions by the Hon’ble Lt Governor for maintenance of cleanliness in areas visited by tourists and as part of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’, a cleanliness drive was organised by the District Administration (N&M Andaman), involving all the line Departments and Panchayati Raj Institutions of Baratang in Nilambur jetty covering an area from the jetty upto APWD Guest House on 8th June 2015. The entire area was cleaned up and eight trucks of garbage were lifted and dumped at the dumping yard. In addition, cleanliness drives were also carried out at Middle Strait Jetty area where the pan gummites at the jetty in front of the passenger hall were also removed in order to avoid traffic inconvenience.
Instructions were issued to the Departments concerned and the PRI members to ensure cleanliness and conduct cleanliness drives every fortnight. A circular to all Departments in this regard was issued, especially for Baratang and adjoining areas, in view of the huge flow of tourists and resultant accumulation of huge quantities of garbage and waste.
