Port Blair, May 11: At Mohanpura in the heart of the city, you walk at your own risk. Uneven surface and wide pits all over on the footpath infront of Hotel ACC have become a nightmare for pedestrians. The Footpath laid over the main sewage drains has turned into danger spots due to missing lids posing grave danger to pedestrians and motorists in the region.
According to reports, many parts of the footpath are lying bare due to missing concrete slabs meant to cover the hollow spaces. Many pedestrians in the area have fallen into the drain underneath the gaps recently and the situation is bound to become worse with the arrival of monsoon as pedestrians may not know where the wide gap is on the footpath because of the overflowing water.
“The authorities concerned have adopted a slack approach towards maintenance and repairs of the footpath. It’s now months that the footpath is lying uncovered giving jitters to motorists and pedestrians. The situation turns worse in the evening hours and many have fallen into the wide gaps in the pavement. We expect the authorities to immediately intervene and cover the bare areas in the footpath with concrete slabs. Action should also be taken to ensure timely maintenance of the drainage system in the area,” complained a number of residents of Mohanpura.
