Port Blair, Jan 07: Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament moved an amendment No.85 to Lok Pal & Lokayukta bill, 2011 to include the 4 union territories without Legislature viz Lakshadeep, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli and A & N Islands in the bill since according to him there is huge corruption in these UTs. Mr. Ray stated in his speech that these UTs are under the Central Govt and therefore he is demanding for Lokayukta.
The amendment was put to vote and Negativated. However, the leader of the opposition intervened and stated that this is a major deletion in the bill, hence may included to prevent corruption and therefore the amendment moved by Mr. Ray may be adopted. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister intervened and informed the house that an appropriate mechanism will be established to deal with corruption in these UTs. Mr. Ray further stated that he want to include the Lt. Governor, A & N Islands under Lokayukta along with other 3 UTs and accordingly moved the amendment.
