Port Blair, Mar 27: The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands has directed the visiting Senior Executive Shri J.E. Prabhakarraj of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad to extend their subsidy facilities available on various fisheries infrastructures and assets such as procurement of Fishing vessels, Refer transport vessel, Ice Plant & Cold Storage, Ornamental fish culture, Cage culture and Retail market outlet etc. to the Fishers and Fishing Industry of A & N Islands.
On the directives of Lt. Governor, A&N Islands the issue was perused by A & N Administration with NFDB, Hyderabad for grant of subsidy towards reconstruction of 02 hygienic Fish Markets in Port Blair Township which has been now sanctioned @ 55% of the total cost of construction. The construction of these 02 Fish Markets one each at Mohanpura and Junglighat will soon be taken up by APWD.
In view of increasing efforts now being put-in to harvest the rich fisheries resources from the sea around A&N Islands, the plight of traditional small scale fishermen is being taken care of through administrative efforts to increase the limit of fishable waters legislatively exclusively for traditional fishermen around this UT.
Considering the difficulty presently being faced by the traditional fishermen in getting the log and swan timber of their choice for the construction of traditional fishing boats the Department of Fisheries has been directed by the Lt. Governor to work out quantum of timber which will annually be required by fisher community and approach the Secretary (Forest & Environment) for appropriate adjustment.
