Rotary Club of Port Blair, jointly organized a club meeting at Hotel Fortune Resort Bay Island with the visiting Rotary Club of Madras members, which is the third oldest club in India after Calcutta and Bombay. Rotary Club of Madras which was chartered on 19th July, 1929 and it has about 215 members. The club has been and continues to be at the forefront of the Rotary movement and played a pioneering role in “Polio Plus”. Ongoing service activities of the Club include Boys Town, a residential facility that houses over 100 underprivileged children in two locations, Gummidipoondi and Selaiyur Rotary Nagar, a social parenting center at a slum in Royapettah and a Women’s Empowerment Center in Sembakkam, all in and around Chennai. This year Rotary Club of Madras has launched two flagship projects. One is a major Sanitation Project to create Open Defecation Free Communities at Amarampedu village & Gummidipoondi has seen spectacular success. The second flagship project of the club this year is the “Rotary End Polio Flame”, to herald a Polio Free World. Launched in Chennai in Dec. 2014 by the Rotary International President Gary Haung, the Flame is travelling around the world and will terminate in Sao Paulo, Brazil at Rotary’s International Convention in June, 2015.
At the club meeting various completed projects of Rotary club of Port Blair were put forth like Tree Sampling planting programme during Vanmahostava, Programme on positive thinking for the children of Govt Model Senior Secondary School, Pensioners Health Camp at Syndicate Bank ferrargunj(rural area), Health Camp at “old age home” and Dental Camp for the differently abled children, felicitated a honest cobbler for returning Rs11,000/, Continued Medical Education(CME) programme for the Government doctors with specialists from SRM Dental College & Hospital, Chennai and also organized a free Oral Pre-Cancerous detection and free treatment camp for 3 days, biopsy, cytology and free medicines were distributed for the benefit of the patients, Oro- Nasal fistula operation & Cataract eye operation to an underprivileged lady (both sponsored by club members), Virtual Blood Bank, International Coastal Clean-up in coordination with Andaman Nicobar command and Indian Maritime foundation(IMF) Chennai, Vermibed and Vermicompost at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Movie show for the differently abled children & inmates of “Old Age Home” in coordination with Inner Wheel Club, Dental Camp at Bakuntala (rural area), Donated Solar lanterns to 75 persons to a remote village in Middle Andaman, Picnic for differently abled children, Interschool Spell Bee competition, Oral Hygiene & Dental Care screening at Kendriya Vidayalaya No. 1, Drawing competition on “World Polio Day” at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Interactive Session on suicide prevention for parents of Class XI and X students, The first and only Rotary Club hoarding installed at Marine drive, Pulse Polio materials given to Directorate of Health Services, for the first time IT seminar on ITES, Implementation in A & N Islands, “Hatha Yoga” for Rotarians.
With a good interaction and exchange of ideas. President of Rotary Club of Madras Rtn.S.N Srikanth(PHF) spoke on rotaries future on-going projects at Chennai and thanked immensely for conducting a joint meeting. Flags of both the clubs were exchanged by PP. Rtn.Mohd Jadwet and conducted with the joint effort of Rtn. Rajesh Anand, Rtn. Amit Goenka & vote of thanks was proposed by Rtn.Dhinakaran All Rotarians of RC of Port Blair were present in the meeting.
