Port Blair, Feb 24: Awareness cum sensitization programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Act sponsored by PPV and FRA, New Delhi was conducted for the farmers of South & Middle Andaman at Garacharma Research Complex, as a part of the National Science Day (NSD) 2015.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest Dr.S.Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI exhorted the farmers to have the knowledge on the farmer’s right which is one of the most important act, initiated in 2001. This empowers the farmers with the right on the plant genetic resources conserved. He gave the example of few custodian farmers of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, who have been identified for conserving plant/animal genetic resources and they have been facilitated for recognition by PPV& FRA. The participation of farmers from different areas was very much appreciated. He believes that with the knowledge acquired gained during the programme ,the farmers will be the ambassador for disseminating the knowledge of PPV& FRA to their peer groups.
Dr.A.K.Singh,Senior Scientist & Coordinator of the programme through power point presentation sensitized the farmers on the subject and replied to all the queries related to plant protection and farmers right. A pamphlet was also provided to the participating farmers, as reference material. Highlight of the programme was a film on the Farmer’s Right which was screened during the occasion.
Dr. R.K.Gautam, HoD, Field Crops, Dr. S.K.Zamir Ahmed, Organizing secretary, NSD-2015, Shri Nipin Narendra Nag, Member Zila Parishad also spoke on the occasion. Shri B.C Das Up Pradhan, Humphery Gunj and Shri Kasinath Saha, PRI member, Chouldari were present.
A total of 69 farmers including 41 male and 28 female from different cluster of villages viz Manglutan, Humphery Gunj, Ferrargunj,Hasmatabad, North Wandoor, New Wandoor, Herpatabad,Chouldari, Collinpur,Manpur, Guptapara,Badmash Pahad, Memeyo of South Andaman and Addazig, Nayagarh, of Sundergarh of Middle Andaman participated .
Beside, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Andaman of the Institute have started twin inservice training on Carp culture- a profitable venture for rural prosperity and value addition in seasonal fruits and vegetables, which was inaugurated today by the Chief Guest Shri J B Singh, IAS, Secretary (Agriculture/ AH&VS & Fisheries, A& N Admn.) for the front line extension officials of the line departments/ rural development etc. at Sippighat in presence of Dr.S.Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI, the Guest of Honour and Dr. Nagesh Ram, PC, KVKs.
