Port Blair, Feb 13: An awareness programme on Scientific rearing of goat for improving productivity was organized at Calicut village on 11.02.2015 by Animal Science Division, ICAR-CIARI in collaboration with Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Port Blair. The program was organized under the project “All India Coordinated Research Project on Goat improvement”. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. A. Kundu, HoD, Division of Animal Science, ICAR-CIARI, in the presence of Shri. Abdul Manaf, Pradhan, Brichgunj Gram Panchayat, Shri. Ganeshan, Sarpanch and PRI members viz. Shri. P. Rajendran, Smti. Ashna Majid and Smti. Kolostica. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the project. Dr. M.S.Kundu, Principal Scientist & Dr. K. Mohammed, SVO, Garacharma Hospital, DAH&VS were the resource persons. A total of 41 farmers including 9 women farmers attended the programme.
Dr. A. Kundu in his address appreciated the farmers for showing interest in goat farming. He highlighted about the importance of goat farming and gave detail information about the management of scientific goat rearing for maximizing the productivity. He also informed that schemes on poultry and pig have also been initiated by ICAR-CIARI and farmers can contact the Animal Science Division for further information.
Shri. Abdul Manaf, Pradhan thanked ICAR-CIARI for implementing the scheme for the benefit of the farmers belonging to Calicut and adjoining villages. He urged all the farmers to utilize the benefit of the scheme for productivity enhancement of the goat and assured fullest cooperation for successful implementation of the scheme in his panchayat.
Dr. K. Mohammed, SVO, DAH&VS informed about the various advantages of the goat rearing and selection of suitable breeds for improving the productivity. He urged all the farmers to conduct routine deworming measures for control of the parasitic diseases. He also informed about the various schemes of the Animal Husbandry Department.
Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the project gave detail information about the objectives of the programme. He also talked about the method for selection of breeding bucks and doe for improving the body weight gain, reproductive performance and better milk yield. He urged all the farmers to follow the health measures like routine deworming, vaccination, deticking, cleaning of the goat shed, proper disposal of the urine and dung as per the standard procedures to get maximum profit from the goat farming.
Dr. M.S.Kundu, gave detail information on the feed and fodder, concentrate feed and balanced nutrition. He also emphasized on utilizing the intercropping spaces between the areacanut and coconut trees for growing suitable fodder.
During the programme, the various aspects of goat rearing viz, feeds and feeding of goats, health management of goats and care and management of kids were detailed. The farmers also interacted with the resource personal on various field problems.
