Port Blair, Feb 13: The Department of Homescience, JNRM in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi organised a one day basic training programme on Human Rights to the students community of JNRM on 13th February 2015 in the seminar room. Around 100 students participated in the programme. Dr Sudershan Kumar Jain, Sr Research Officer of NHRC was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. During his special address to the students he dealt in detail about NHRC and its various activities.
He advised to students to reap the full benefit out of this programme and became a brand ambassador for human rights. later he took a class on NHRC, SHRC and various commissions working for Human Rights. Shri Rizwanullah, Deputy Secretary (Law), Andaman & Nicobar Administration while delivering inaugural address he emphasized the legal rights and services which is available for inmates of jail. He elaborately explained the rights of labour, the conditions of jail etc. Dr Iqbal Ahmad, Principal JNRM exhorted the students to carry this message to those who are depressed and in ultimate need. He also advised the students to utilise the services of NHRC like internship opportunies.
Francis Xavier, HOD, English spoke on human rights and penal settlers. Further he added human rights organisations at national level like NHRC strive to work hard for the humanity. Shri.K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience and Convener of this programme welcomed the gathering the explained the students about the Rights of Women and Children through various provisions and CEDAW.
Shri Sivabalan, Advocate & Notary Public spoke about the rights of vulnerable, bonded labour, child labour etc. Smt. Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor, Dept of Homescience proposed vote of thanks. The students would were sensitised about the Rights of Women and Children, Rights of other Vulnerable & Marginalised Groups, & Human Rights Institution in India etc., The programme was moderated by Dr N Lakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi.
