Port Blair, Jan 29: The 32nd Death Anniversary of Comrade P.K.S. Prasad, veteran trade union leader of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was observed today the 29th January, 2015 jointly by the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association and CITU. The main function was held at Crusade House premises at Phoenix Bay, Port Blair where wreaths were laid on the Martyrs Memorial Column of Com PKS Prasad by the leaders of trade unions, Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association and other organizations in the evening. This was followed by a remembrance meeting which was presided over by Shri Raj Kumar Saw who recalled the valiant struggles conducted by the trade unions and Association under the leadership of PKS Prasad.
Speaking on the occasion Shri K.G.Das, former General Secretary of NGOs’ Association explained in brief various anti-working class policies being pursued by the Central Government and called upon the govt. employees and workers to come forward to fight against such policies. Addressing the gathering Shri D.Ayyappan, General Secretary, Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association expressed concern over the delay in accepting various demands of the Central Govt. employees by the Central government while corporate sector is being extended with the tax benefits amounting to thousands of crores of rupees and pointed out the latest decision of the central government not to go on appeal in the supreme court in the Vodafone case to favour the company with 3300 crores of rupees of tax exemption.
Addressing the gathering Shri D.Laxman Rao, CITU leader emphasized the need to have broader unity among the workers. Shri Venkat Rama Rao, Vice President, South Andaman Teachers’ Branch of the NGOs’ Association while speaking on the occasion asked the young generation of government employees to join the working class movement in the islands. Shri TS Sreekumar, while speaking on the function explained in brief the benefits being enjoyed by the government employees in the islands due to the movement conducted by late PKS Prasad. Shri S L Vinjit, Joint Secretary, South Andaman Teachers’ Branch also addressed the meeting. A large number of employees and workers attended the meeting.
At Diglipur, to pay tribute to Com PKS Prasad, the NGOs’ Association and CITU jointly arranged an “Annadanam” for the poor children in a Orphanage. A remembrance meeting was also organized in the evening at the branch office where Shri Gopal Chandra Dey and Shri K.P.Paul addressed the meeting.
