Port Blair, Oct 22: On the occasion of World Polio Day on 24th October, 2014. Rotary Club of Port Blair conducted drawing competition for the students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Port Blair. Dr. S.K Paul, Director of Health Services, spoke on the occasion and said neighbourhood children should be encouraged to approach the polio booth when ever a pulse polio programme is conducted by Directorate of Health Services and gave away certificate and prizes(on behalf of Rotary Club).
Miss. Puja Das of Class X C got the first prize and Miss. Sujata of class IX A got the second prize and Miss T. Parmeshwari of class XII D got the third prize and Miss R. Prabhawati of class X C got consolation prize. A small skit was presented by the students on pulse polio theme, “Doo Bhoond Jindagi ki”. Dr.Dinesh, President, Rotary Club of Port Blair said in his speech that End polio campaign of Rotary international’s project had eradicated polio in India with the help of WHO, UNICEF. Now polio virus will only be found in history books and not in children.
There was a great applause when we presented the book “Malala Yousafzai the girl who stood up for girls education and changed the world” by Patricia Maccormick to the winner of drawing competition.
Dr.Dinesh said in A & N Islands 66O polio centres including 10 in defense area and 58 mobile booth were set up and 30,796 children were given oral polio vaccine last year.
Rotary club actively participated in the project by providing banners and posters, and said on 11th feb, 2013 Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee got the rotary’s highest award for his leadership for
countries victory over polio. Smti. .Sangeeta Chand, Principal, Govt Girls Sr.Sec School proposed vote of thanks and appreciated Rotary Club for this programme.
