Port Blair, Aug 07: Replying to a question on time schedule of operationalization of the international air services and air traffic control at Veer Savarkar Airport, Port Blair, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, stated that the existing terminal building at Port Blair is saturated, and therefore, it has been planned to construct a new integrated terminal building for peak hours with a capacity of 1200 passengers and tender auction for the same is in process.
Presently, the localizer, which is one of the components of instrument landing system, is available and there is a plan to install glide path so as to complete instrument landing system. The Minister also informed that the airport is operated by Indian Navy and they have been requested to commence round the clock operation at this airport.
Replying to another question, the Minister, Shri G.M. Siddeshwar informed that Port Blair is an International Airport (Civil Enclave) and all facilities to handle international flights are available.
Answering a question on taking over the air traffic control operation from the defence by the Airport Authority, the Minister stated that there is no such proposal at this stage, a communication from the Office of the Member of Parliament said here today.
