Port Blair, June 08: This is only because of the present Lt. Governor’s constant efforts and regular follow ups that South Andaman region will be getting 2nd Degree College from this session. But the news about construction of new college building at Chakkargaon has left people of remote South Andaman villages upset.
Coming to Port Blair college from remote South Andaman villages, braving heavy rain, heat, traffic, ferry vessel struggle, is a most tiresome task for students.
In JNRM, on rainy days one can see totally drenched students, especially girls, attending classes with great difficulties. Moreover, students have to spend heavy amount everyday to reach college and return back.
Since last many years, Islanders have been demanding another college in areas like, Chouldari, Wimberlygunj or Bambooflat but surprisingly the Administration allotted land for second degree college at Chakkargoan, which is another cut-off area of Port Blair city. Before taking such decision, Administration did not even feel it important to take opinion from Public or PRI members.
The file for allotment of land for the second degree college was handled very secretly and nobody came to know about it, till a press release revealed this fact.
As per present plan, for initial years the second college will have classes at Haddo School and once the building of the college is ready the college will shift to actual college building at Chakkargaon.
People of South Andaman Village say that they have great expectations from the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen (Retd.) A K Singh, who is the main driving force behind the second degree college and also the medical college, which were till now only dreams. Public now demand a review in this process and request the Lt. Governor to order to shift the new degree college to South Andaman area, so that students of that area have a degree college nearby. After all having another college in city will help only Babus and not students.
