Port Blair, Mar 05: Lt. Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh, today visited Prothrapur Jail and inspected the basic facilities available for the Jail inmates there. Interacting with the Jail inmates at a brief function held in the Jail premises, the Lt. Governor appreciated the compassionate gesture shown by the inmates, who presented a cheque of Rs 44,600 to the Lt. Governor as a contribution towards the LG’s relief fund. The donation itself reflects the feeling of humanity and caring attitude of the Jail inmates, who despite living a stressful and hard life thought to help the needy people of these Islands by their contribution towards the noble cause, the Lt. Governor said. The inmates have contributed towards the LG’s Relief fund by donating the money from their wages.
The Lt. Governor interacted with the inmates including the foreign nationals. Describing Jail as a reformation center, the Lt. Governor directed the Jail authorities to ensure that basic facilities are provided to these inmates, which should be up to the mark. He also issued direction to the Secretary (Law) to make available sports and recreational facilities for the inmates. Directions were issued for upgrading the library facilities and providing informative books and magazines besides newspapers so that these inmates are aware of the developments taking place outside.
The Lt. Governor also met the women inmates in the jail and enquired about their well being. He also saw the handicraft works of the women inmates. The Lt. Governor also visited the kitchen block and had a taste of the food prepared for the inmates. Thereafter, he visited the medical block and interacted with the inmate patients there. Directions were issued to evolve some mechanism so that doctors and nurses are available on call duty to take care of the health needs of the inmates. The Lt. Governor also visited the workshop block where inmates are being imparted training in different trades such as carpentry, furniture making and handicrafts from cane and bamboo, tailoring and weaving. A memento was presented to the Lt. Governor by the jail inmates on the occasion.
DGP, Shri Sudhir Yadav, Secretary (Law), Shri G.Theva Neethi Dhas, the IG (Prison) Shri Pankaj Kumar Singh, Superintendent Jail, Shri K. C Meena and Jailor Mohd Haneef were present on the occasion.
