Port Blair, Feb 07: As part of the ongoing multilateral gala congregation MILAN 2014, a demonstration of Jungle Survival techniques will be held for the crew of the participating foreign ships. The demonstration is being organised by the Indian Army at Birchgunj Military Station.154 Infantry Battalion(TA)BIHAR, whose maximum strength is drawn from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will demonstrate various snippets on benefits of the rich flora and fauna of these Islands and their practical application for survival in the jungle, based on contemporary military practices.
The demonstration will commence with a display of various herbs and plants found in these Islands with stress on identification of edible and poisonous plants. It will be followed by a demonstration on the procedure for obtaining safe drinking water if marooned on an Island. Procedure for making shelters by using the material naturally available on these Islands will be demonstrated. The prime attraction of the demonstration will be the display of traditional techniques of making traps using naturally available materials for catching small animals like monitor lizards, fishes and birds of various kinds. A demonstration on handling of wild snakes and their cleaning and cooking will also be shown to the participants.
