Port Blair, Dec 01: Expressing concern over the losses suffered by the farmers of Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to the Cyclonic Strom ‘Leher’, the Congress unit of this remote archipelago today demanded to waive off loan amount of farmers, fishermen, poultry and goetery owners with interest.
Talking to reporters at Port Blair, the President of Pradesh Congress Committee said that hundreds of farmers in A & N Islands have lost their harvest and plantation while hundreds of other fishermen sustained heavy loss in poultry, goetery, pisciculture.
“Most of these farmers have lost their livelihood and are waiting for the some support from the Government,” Sharma said.
The PCC president said that the party has already requested the Lt. Governor to waive off loan amount of farmers and also urged the Lt. Governor to order assessment of damaged sustained by the farmers and public of these remote Islands on 25 November 2013 due to cyclone ‘Leher’.
Kuldeep has also demanded to compensate the losses suffered even by the encroachers in encroachment pockets.
On behalf of Congress Party, Sharma lauded the efforts of the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands and also the Administration to tackle the post cyclone situation very efficiently.
Severe Cyclonic Strom ‘Leher’ had hit South Andaman region of A & N Islands hard in the early morning of 25th November 2013, damaging crops, plantations, uprooting of trees, road blockage etc.
