Port Blair, Nov 7: Mr. C.Saravanan, the General Secretary Human Rights Organisation, Andaman and Nicobar Islands in his letter to the Lt. Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has requested him to grant relaxation to the petrol vehicles from smoke test and has also requested for increasing the validity of the smoke test certificate from six months to one year.
Supporting his request Mr. Saravanan added that vide a press note released in government local newspaper ‘The daily telegram’ all the motor vehicles two and four wheelers in Andaman and Nicobar Islands were asked to obtain smoke testing certificate from a private smoke testing vendor on payment. To comply with the instruction of A&N Administration people of this Islands are sincerely getting their vehicles checked for emissions.
He further added that on the basis of grievances received by HRO office in respect to smoke testing being conducted for motor vehicles in Port Blair through a private smoke testing vendor on payment, the ‘Human Rights Organization‘Port Blair suggests that the percentage of air pollution by diesel vehicles are comparatively higher than the petrol vehicles hence it is necessary to monitor the smoke of diesel fuelled heavy motor vehicles not for the petrol vehicles.
He also added that as per the statistical result of smoke test the percentage of failure of petrol fuelled vehicle is very less as compared to the diesel fuelled vehicles.
