Port Blair, Oct 03 : The Andaman and Nicobar Command today said that after the incident of Mumbai attack the Government of India has sanctioned total 18 coastal radars for Andaman and Nicobar Islands to ensure coastal security, out of which four will be installed in the first phase.
Addressing a press conference at Port Blair, the Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), Air Marshal P K Roy today said that four coastal radars will be installed across Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the first phase and the next batch, more four will be commissioned.
“The first radar was supposed to be installed at Narcondum Island but due to objections from various conversationalists about selection of the site, the Andaman and Nicobar Command is now looking for another site. The site for second radar is finalized at East Island for which we have got necessary clearance,” Air Marshal, P K Roy said.
The CINCAN said that for other two radars, clearance is awaited from the Ministry.
Regarding setting up of a base for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in Andaman and Nicobar Islands for round the clock surveillance of vast sea area around Andaman and Nicobar Islands, CINCAN said that the project is under active consideration of Ministry of Defence.
The Andaman and Nicobar Command, the first tri-service joint command of India, is all set to celebrate its 12 Raising Day on 8th October 2013.
“ANC has grown manifold in terms of assets and manpower and we are glowing in our stature everyday. I assure everyone once again that, ANC is fully geared to meet all challenges ahead of us and will continue to render yeoman service to the Island in particular and our nation in general,” the CINCAN added.
