Port Blair, Sept 01: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, reviewed the functioning of Health and Industries Departments. According to a Raj Niwas source, the Lt Governor issued directions to the Principal Secretary (Health) to expedite the process of establishing a Medical College at Port Blair. He also gave directions to Director Health Services to take immediate steps to remove the deficiencies in the functioning of Primary Health Centres (PHC) and Community Health Centres (CHC). He further directed the Health Department to work out a scheme for engaging Specialist Doctors from mainland including retired doctors for the G.B. Pant Hospital. Principal Secretary (Health) has been asked to prepare a proposal for tie-ups with charitable hospitals on the mainland, where treatment can be conveniently provided to the people of A&N Islands. Further, the possibilities of a Health Insurance scheme for the citizens under the BPL category were also discussed.
While reviewing the functioning of the Industries Department, the Lt Governor reviewed the various subsidy schemes implemented by the Industries Department of the A&N Administration. He directed the Secretary (Industries) to work on refurbishing programme of the Sagarika Emporium of Port Blair. Besides, the setting up of an outlet at New Delhi at the Rajiv Gandhi Handicraft Bhavan was also taken up for discussion.
