Port Blair, August 22 The Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) A K Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM reiterated the Administration’s commitment to provide the best health care facilities in the Islands, as per aspirations of the people of the Islands. Among the many steps and tasks that are being laid out for the Administration, strengthening the Health and Education sectors is high priority, he said while inaugurating the two day 8th Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Nephrology at a function held in the auditorium of G B Pant Hospital here this evening.
He further stated that though there are medical facilities spread across the Islands, shortage of doctors and absence of specialists services is a great challenge, which has to be corrected. The process for establishment of a Medical college has also been hastened in the islands, in which G B Pant Hospital will be the Nodal Agency, he said.
Referring to the conference, the Lt Governor expressed hope that the gathering of renowned Nephrologists will deliberate on latest advancements in nephrology, share their knowledge with each other as well as doctors of A & N Islands, thereby benefitting all. He also urged the doctors of these Islands to take full advantage of this opportunity and update their knowledge, which he said will work towards increasing the awareness and prevention of Kidney disease. An amount of Rs 2.00 lakhs was donated towards LG’s Relief Fund on the occasion.
The Lt. Governor also felicitated Padamshree Dr. K S Chugh on the occasion.
The Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash released a souvenir of the Indian Academy of Nephrology conference.
In his presidential address, the President, Indian Academy of Nephrology (IAN), Dr. S C Dash highlighted the objectives of IAN and said that one of the objectives is to create a nationwide awareness campaign on prevention of chronic kidney diseases to the people.
The Organizing Secretary, Indian Academy of Nephrology Conference, Prof. S K Agrawal while presenting the Academy report said that the purpose for organising the conference was to reach the people and inform them of the measures to prevent chronic kidney diseases through electronic and print media.
The conference is being attended by eminent nephrologists from all over the country, besides the doctors of the Directorate of Health Services.
Earlier, Dr. D S Ray welcomed the dignitaries present on the occasion and the inaugural function concluded with the vote of thanks, proposed by Dr. Shiv Shankar Singh, Medical Specialist, G B Pant Hospital.
