Sri Vijaya Puram, October 15: Mr. Jitendra Narayan, District President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), South Andaman, has written to the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, seeking urgent intervention to address frequent power outages and severe voltage fluctuations in Sri Vijaya Puram and South Andaman District.
Recalling that Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has often articulated a clear national vision that the dream of the government is to provide electricity all seven days a week, 365 days a year and 24 hours a day to every village and every household, Mr. Narayan said that, inspired by this vision of reliable and uninterrupted power for all, he was placing before them the serious difficulties being faced by the people of Sri Vijaya Puram and several parts of South Andaman District due to frequent power outages and severe voltage fluctuations over the past many days.
He stated that consumers across the district continue to pay their electricity bills regularly and without default, yet the quality and reliability of power supply remain highly unsatisfactory. It is a matter of deep concern, he said, that electricity tariffs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands rank among the highest in the country, while the standard of service provided to the public continues to fall far short of acceptable levels. The frequent and unscheduled power cuts, coupled with extreme voltage fluctuations, are causing widespread hardship to ordinary citizens in their daily lives.
According to the letter, students are finding it extremely difficult to concentrate on their studies both at school and at home, as sudden interruptions and unstable voltage disrupt their academic work, particularly during examination periods. Hospitals, primary health centres and other healthcare facilities are also facing serious operational difficulties, which pose a direct risk to patient care and emergency services. Household routines have been thrown into disarray, and many families are suffering substantial financial losses due to damage caused to refrigerators, televisions, computers, water pumps and other electrical appliances by repeated voltage surges and drops.
Beyond domestic inconvenience, Mr. Narayan said, the unreliable power supply is adversely affecting small businesses, shops, offices and the tourism sector, which forms a vital part of the local economy. Continuous disruptions undermine public confidence and create an atmosphere of frustration among law-abiding citizens who expect basic civic amenities in return for the high tariffs they are compelled to pay. He said the situation calls for not only immediate corrective measures but also a thorough review of the existing distribution infrastructure, maintenance practices and contingency arrangements, so that such recurring problems do not become a permanent feature of life in South Andaman.
He earnestly requested the Lt. Governor to intervene on a priority basis, direct the concerned authorities to take swift and effective steps, and ensure that a stable, reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply is restored to Sri Vijaya Puram and the affected areas of South Andaman District without further delay. Personal attention to this pressing public grievance, he said, would go a long way in alleviating the hardship faced by thousands of residents and in realising the national commitment of quality power for every Islander.
