
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 9 : The Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration, under the District Action Plan (DAP) 2026–27 of the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) for South Andaman District organized the two-day training programme on ‘Hygienic Handling of Fish during Fishing and Post-Harvest Techniques’ at the Fish Landing Centre, Junglighat, under Prothrapur Block, on 8th and 9th September, 2026.
The programme was coordinated by Shri Hemanto Kirtonia, In-Charge, FLC Junglighat, with the technical support from the Department of Food Safety and Fishery Survey of India, Zonal Base, Sri Vijaya Puram along with the Sagar Mitras. The training was aimed at enhancing awareness and practical knowledge among fishermen on hygienic fish handling, maintaining fish freshness, proper post-harvest practices and prevention of food contamination and food-borne illnesses.
On 8th September, 2026, the participants were imparted training by Shri. Saikat Paul, Food Safety Officer, Shri. Bijoy Kumar Mondal, Food Safety Officer and Shri. Soumyadip Paul, Assistant Fisheries Development Officer, on various aspects of maintaining the quality and freshness of fish, hygienic handling practices, sanitation and measures to prevent contamination and food poisoning. The participants were also sensitized on the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and cleanliness of fish handling areas, equipment and containers.
On 9th September, 2026, Shri. Puran Singh, Junior Fisheries Scientist and Kausubh Bargode, Senior Scientific Assistant from FSI, Zonal Base, Sri Vijaya Puram conducted a practical session on Tuna fish cutting, handling and preservation techniques. The session focused on appropriate post-harvest practices to minimize quality deterioration and ensure better hygiene and shelf life of fish.
On completion of the programme, participation certificates were distributed to all 20 participants. Essential hygiene inputs, including hand gloves and hand sanitizer, were also provided to encourage and facilitate the adoption of hygienic practices during fishing and post-harvest handling of fish.
