
Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 30: Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder, celebrated National Sports Day 2026 with great enthusiasm and sporting spirit to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Dr. R. V. R. Murthy, Principal, Mahatma Gandhi Government College, along with the Special Guest, Mrs. Neelam Madhuri Minz, an international water sports athlete specialising in kayaking and canoeing.
The formal proceedings began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and a floral tribute to the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand, honouring his remarkable contribution to Indian sports.
This was followed by the felicitation ceremony, during which the Chief Guest, Dr. R. V. R.
Murthy, felicitated the Special Guest, Mrs. Neelam Madhuri Minz, in recognition of her achievements and contribution to the field of sports.
The programme then proceeded with the rendition of the National Song, “Vande Mataram,” by the girl students of the College.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest, Dr. R. V. R. Murthy, highlighted the importance of sports in developing discipline, teamwork, character and a healthy lifestyle among students. He encouraged the students to actively participate in sports and physical activities alongside their academic pursuits.
This was followed by an address by the Special Guest, Mrs. Neelam Madhuri Minz, who shared her experiences as an international water sports athlete specialising in kayaking and canoeing. She motivated the students to pursue sports with dedication, discipline, perseverance and confidence and encouraged them to remain actively involved in sports and physical activities.
The formal programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Prashant Kumar Choudhary, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, Special Guest, faculty members, non-teaching staff, students and all those who contributed towards the successful organisation of the celebration.
The formal ceremony ended with the National Anthem, following which refreshments were distributed among the students.
As part of the National Sports Day celebrations, a special screening of the sports-based film “Chak De! India” was organised for the students. The film highlighted the values of teamwork, determination, leadership, discipline and sporting excellence.
The celebrations further continued with a friendly volleyball match between the Department of History and the Department of Political Science. Before the commencement of the match, the Principal, Dr. R. V. R. Murthy, met and interacted with the participating students, encouraging them to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy competition. Following his interaction with the players, the match formally commenced and witnessed enthusiastic participation, adding to the vibrant sporting atmosphere on the campus.
The National Sports Day 2026 celebrations at Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder, successfully brought together sporting activities, inspiration, cultural participation and recreation, reaffirming the College’s commitment towards promoting physical fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork and holistic development among students.
