Sri Vijaya Puram, August 4: Expressing concern over the recurring power shortages in Diglipur, Mr. Biplab Mandal, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Sitanagar, has urged the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to expedite the procurement and installation of a Diesel Generator (DG) Set at the Diglipur Power House to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in the region.
In a representation addressed to the Secretary (Power), A&N Administration, Mr. Mandal referred to several earlier communications sent by the Gram Panchayat since 2023, highlighting the long-pending demand for strengthening power generation infrastructure in Diglipur. The latest letter, dated July 18, 2026, reiterates the need for immediate action on the installation of a 5 MW DG Set, along with the required electrical infrastructure.
According to the Pradhan, Diglipur continues to experience severe power shortages, particularly during the dry season, when water levels at the Kalpong Hydroelectric Project decline considerably. The reduced power generation often results in frequent power cuts, low voltage and prolonged interruptions in electricity supply, causing widespread inconvenience to residents and affecting essential public services.
Mr. Mandal stated that the power crisis has had a significant impact on educational institutions, healthcare facilities, households, commercial establishments and other essential sectors. Despite repeated requests and follow-up correspondence over the past several years, the proposed DG Set and the associated infrastructure have yet to be commissioned.
The Pradhan pointed out that the delay has not only inconvenienced the public but has also adversely affected the socio-economic development of the Diglipur region. He stressed that if the project is completed during the current rainy season, the administration would be better prepared to meet electricity demand during the forthcoming dry months, when power shortages are most severe.
In his letter, Mr. Mandal observed that timely completion of the project would help ensure uninterrupted power supply and prevent the recurrence of the hardships faced by villagers almost every year due to electricity shortages. He described the issue as one of urgent public importance and appealed to the Administration to intervene and expedite the pending works.
Mr. Mandal further expressed hope that early completion of the project would provide long-term relief to thousands of consumers in Diglipur and surrounding villages, while strengthening the region’s power infrastructure and supporting its overall development.
The Gram Panchayat has urged the Power Department to treat the matter on priority and take immediate steps to commission the DG Set before the onset of the next dry season, thereby avoiding another year of recurring power disruptions for residents of North Andaman.
