Sri Vijaya Puram, July 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through the State Control Room, has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the coming days, with heavy rainfall likely over parts of the Islands.
According to the weather forecast, from July 31 to August 5, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In addition, heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is likely at isolated places over the Nicobar Islands on August 1 and August 2, and over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on August 4.
A Fishermen Warning has been issued for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. While sea conditions are expected to remain generally favourable until August 2, squally weather with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail along and off the Andaman & Nicobar coasts on August 3. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on that day.
The IMD has also issued a Swell Surge Alert for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. Swell waves ranging between 1.3 and 1.4 metres, with a wave period of 16–20 seconds, are expected till 11.30 p.m. on July 31. Authorities have advised boat operators to ply with utmost caution due to the possibility of surging waves, while tourists and members of the public have been urged to exercise care during coastal recreational activities.
A Farmer Warning has also been issued. From July 31 to August 4, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places across the Islands. Heavy rainfall is also expected over the Nicobar Islands on August 1 and August 2. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard crops, livestock, and agricultural equipment.
The outlook for the subsequent two days indicates little change in the prevailing weather conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow advisories issued by the concerned authorities.
