Sri Vijayapuram, June 22: Councillor of Ward Number 24 and former Chairperson of the Sri Vijayapuram Municipal Council (SVPMC), Mrs. Kavitha Udhayakumar, has urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to undertake urgent construction and restoration of the drainage system along the road stretch from Bathubasti Check Post to the Mahindra Showroom in Sri Vijayapuram.
In a representation submitted to the Managing Director of NHIDCL, the councillor highlighted the deteriorating condition of the roadside drains, stating that the existing drainage network is either damaged, inadequate, or blocked at several locations. As a result, rainwater accumulates on the road during heavy showers, leading to severe waterlogging and damage to the roadway.
She pointed out that prolonged stagnation of rainwater has resulted in the formation of potholes and weakening of the road surface, posing serious risks to motorists, pedestrians, and school children. The situation, she said, is likely to worsen if timely corrective measures are not undertaken.
The affected stretch is widely used by local residents, school children, office-goers, senior citizens, and emergency vehicles. During the monsoon season, pedestrians often have to walk through waterlogged areas, increasing the risk of accidents and health hazards. Two-wheeler riders are also vulnerable to skidding due to potholes concealed beneath stagnant water.
Expressing concern over the continued neglect of the issue despite repeated public complaints, Mrs. Kavitha Udhayakumar emphasized the need for a scientifically designed and durable drainage system to ensure proper discharge of stormwater and protect the road infrastructure.
She requested NHIDCL to accord top priority to the matter by conducting an immediate site inspection and initiating necessary measures for the construction, restoration, widening, and desilting of the drainage network between Bathubasti Check Post and the Mahindra Showroom.
She further urged the authorities to implement long-term solutions to prevent recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season, stating that early intervention would safeguard public infrastructure and provide relief to thousands of daily commuters and residents who depend on the road.
