Residents of Great Nicobar are once again facing significant hardship following a sudden petrol shortage across the island. According to local sources, fuel stocks were exhausted on June 20, leading to an “Out of Stock” declaration at the island’s fuel outlet. Officials at the petrol pump have reportedly stated that available reserves have reached dead stock levels, making it impossible to continue supplying fuel to consumers.
During discussions with the pump management, it was indicated that the shortage resulted from delays in the arrival of fresh fuel supplies. The unexpected disruption has affected daily life across the island, creating difficulties for commuters, small business owners, fishermen, transport operators, and others who depend on regular fuel availability.
Many residents have expressed concern that a similar fuel crisis occurred only about two months ago. The recurrence of such shortages has raised questions about the reliability of the current supply chain and the need for stronger contingency planning to prevent future disruptions.
Meanwhile, the Nicobar Administration has taken steps to address the situation. According to information received from sources, the vessel MV Chuglum is expected to sail directly to Campbell Bay carrying approximately 20 kilolitres of petrol intended for Great Nicobar. If the schedule remains unchanged, the fuel consignment is expected to reach the island by next weekend, offering temporary relief to residents.
However, for many islanders, the immediate concern remains how essential activities and livelihoods will continue during the intervening days. The sudden depletion of fuel stocks has left many people struggling to manage transportation and other daily necessities.
Residents are now looking to the authorities and concerned agencies for a long-term solution that can ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies and prevent similar crises in the future. The incident has once again highlighted the critical importance of maintaining a reliable supply network for remote island communities.
As the situation develops, attention will remain focused on the measures taken by the administration and supply agencies to restore normalcy and strengthen fuel security for the people of Great Nicobar.
