
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 10: In a significant boost to healthcare services in Great Nicobar, an advanced ambulance donated by the State Bank of India (SBI) was formally flagged off by the Mr. Shivam Tashi Dhawa, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner, Campbell Bay at a ceremony held at PHC Campbell Bay on Wednesday morning.
The ambulance has been dedicated to PHC Gandhi Nagar to strengthen emergency medical transportation services in the region. The flag-off ceremony was attended by SBI Branch Manager Mr. K MOHAMMED BASHEER, Gandhi Nagar Panchayat Pradhan Mr. Prahlad Singh, Govind Nagar Panchayat Pradhan Mr. Venkata Rao, Dr. Meena Nasir, CMO Incharge, Dr. Juliet James, Medical Officer Dr. Ireen Mary Medical Officer, Dr. Arnab Ray Medical Officer PHC Gandhi nagar and other medical staff members.
The proposal for the ambulance was initially put forward by the Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District to SBI authorities in July 2025. The bank approved the request on August 14, 2025, and the announcement was subsequently made during the Independence Day celebration at Mini Stadium, Campbell Bay.
The arrival of the ambulance marks the fulfillment of a long-pending requirement for the people of Gandhi Nagar, located nearly 30 kilometers from Campbell Bay.
Residents often faced difficulties in transporting patients to the main hospital due to the poor condition of existing ambulances.
With the induction of this new vehicle, emergency healthcare services are expected to improve significantly, ensuring timely medical assistance and better patient care.
Local residents and health officials have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Great Nicobar.
