
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 15: The A&N Fire and Emergency Services joined the nation in observing Fire Service Day on April 14, 2026. This year’s theme, “Safe School, Safe Hospital & Fire Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention,” emphasizes the collective responsibility of ensuring fire safety across critical public spaces.
The Fire Service Week commenced with the observance of Commemoration Day on April 14, 2026 at F&ES(HQ), Sri Vijaya Puram to pay homage to the brave personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Smt. Geeta Rani Verma, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Fire), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the commemoration parade.
The Chief Guest highlighted the paramount duties and responsibilities of fire service personnel in safeguarding the lives and property of the Islanders. She emphasized their pivotal role in responding to fire and emergency calls across the Islands and highlighted that the Fire Service has saved property worth approximately ₹116,34,31,300, which is a remarkable achievement by the department.
Fire Service Week is observed every year in memory of a major fire incident that occurred on April 14, 1944, at Victoria Harbour in Mumbai. The tragedy involved the explosion of the ship SS Fort Stikine, which was carrying explosive materials. The incident resulted in the loss of 336 lives and left 1,040 people injured. Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were 66 firefighters of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, who displayed exceptional courage and dedication while carrying out firefighting and rescue operations.
A solemn two-minute silence was observed at the Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters Parade Ground in remembrance of the courageous personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in 2025-2026. The Chief Guest announced the names of the martyrs to honour their selfless service and dedication:
• Sh. Sony S. Kumar, Fire & Rescue Officer, Kerala Fire & Rescue Services
• Sh. Dunger Singh, Leading Fireman, Uttarakhand Fire & Emergency Services .
The event concluded with a fleet march of Fire Service vehicles through the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal area, aimed at spreading awareness among the public about fire prevention and safety measures.
