Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 4:The long-pending issue of the deteriorated road stretch from Baratang Jetty to GSSS Oralkatcha is set to see resolution, as the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) contractor has assured that repair work will commence from January 5, 2026. Following this assurance, the proposed road blockade scheduled for January 10 is likely to be withdrawn.
Earlier, serious concerns were raised over the poor condition of the approximately 200-metre road stretch, which falls under Middle Andaman. A formal representation highlighting safety hazards, public inconvenience, and jurisdictional ambiguity between APWD and NHIDCL was submitted by Mr. R Alager Swamy, Zilla Parishad Member, who had also announced plans to organise a protest and road blockade from January 10 if no action was taken.
According to sources, the NHIDCL contractor, M/s Mohan Mutha Infrastructures Pvt. Ltd., through its management, has now informed Mr. Alager Swamy that repair works will begin from January 5. The contractor has reportedly assured timely execution of the work to address public safety concerns.
Mr. Alagar Swamy told Andaman Sheekha Daily today that in view of this development, that the proposed protest and road blockade will be withdrawn if work begins as assured, while also stressing that the situation will be closely monitored to ensure commitments are fulfilled.
The road serves as a crucial access route for tourists, students, daily commuters, and residents of Oralkatcha, and its repair is expected to significantly improve safety and connectivity in the area.
