Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 24: The CITU has demanded an immediate hike in the financial benefits given to the construction workers of these islands. In the meeting of the A & N Building & Other Construction Workers Welfare Board held on 18th December, 2025, SP Kalairajan, a Member of the Board representing CITU, submitted a proposal in writing to enhance the various benefits to the construction workers in these islands.
At present, the minimum pension to the beneficiary is Rs. 1000 per month. Kalairajan, who is also a Secretary of the CITU A & N State Committee, suggested that this amount should be enhanced to Rs. 3,000 per month. For natural death, at present, an amount of Rs. 1 lakh is provided to each registered worker. Kalairajan suggested that this amount should be doubled to Rs. 2 lakhs. At present, accidental death benefit is Rs. 2 lakhs for the registered workers. CITU Representative proposed that this should be enhanced to Rs. 5 lakhs.
At present, an amount of rupees five thousand is given as Funeral Assistance to the family of a deceased construction worker. SP Kalairajan, Board Member suggested that this amount should be increased to Rs. 25,000/-. Compensation of Rs. 50,000 is given for the accidental death of non-registered workers by the Construction Workers Welfare Board. A CITU representative suggested that this amount should be enhanced to Rs. 2 lakhs.
CITU has further demanded in the Meeting that the Educational Allowance to the children of construction workers across the board should be increased by 50% of the existing amount.
Chairman of the Board/ Secretary (Labour), assured Kalairajan that the demand raised by CITU representatives will be considered favourably.
