Port Blair, Feb 22: The Director General of Police, Mr. S B Deol today said in a press release that for the past two years, the A & N Islands Traffic Police has been making stringent efforts to indoctrine basic traffic safety rules among road-users.
“There have also been protests from some sections of the public and the media that the strictness shown in enforcement was unjustified and ever-enthusiastic, specially in the enforcement which detected 537 cases of drunken driving in 2011. Inspite of the rapidly increasing vehicles on our roads, the A & N Police would like to inform the public that as against 25 fatal accidents in 2010, only 17 were reported in 2011 (reduction by 32%). The number of persons killed has gone down from 27 in 2010 to 17 in 2011 (reduction by 37.03%),” the DGP said in his press release.
According to DGP, persons injured were reduced from 373 in 2010 to 298 in 2011 (reduction by 20.10%). The total cases of accidents reported were 285 in 2010 and 234 in 2011 (minus 17.95%).
“The A & N Police therefore appeals to each citizen to become even more conscious of following traffic rules and regulations so that this trend can be maintained and our roads become totally accident free. The lives we have theoretically saved might include yours or those of your loved ones,” Mr. Deol added.
