Port Blair, May 12: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall warning for the Nicobar District of Andaman and Nicobar Islands during next 24 hours, as cyclone Mahasen intensifies and moves towards Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The general public has also been advised to take precautionary measures.
“Heavy rain (7-12 cm) may occur at isolated places over Nicobar Islands during next 24 hours & Under the influence of Cyclonic storm Mahasen over Southeast Bay of Bengal, strong East to South-easterly wind speed between 45 & 55 Kmph and rough to very rough seas likely along and off Andaman & Nicobar coast,” a caution issued by A & N State Disaster Control Room said here today.
Meanwhile, owing to deep depression coupled with cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal and consequently view the safety of the passengers and the vessel, the Directorate of Shipping Services of A & N Islands has also hinted to suspend or cancel the announced schedule especially in the foreshore & inter-island sector, without any warning.
“Further sailing programme of the announced schedule will depend upon daily weather situation. Similarly, the habour ferry services may also get affected due to adverse weather conditions resulting suspension of ferry services in short notice,” the Deputy Director of Shipping Services informed media today.
In this connection, general public have been advised to plan their journey accordingly keeping in view the present weather situation for avoiding any inconvenience.
“The sailing of announced schedule will be confirmed one hour before the departure time of the vessel,” the Dy. Director said.
