Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 3: Recognising the vast commercial potential of Tropical Cut Flowers, the Department of Agriculture is giving special emphasis on Promotion of Tropical Cut flowers in the Islands. The Island’s agro climatic condition is suitable for growing Tropical Cut Flowers viz. Heliconia, Ginger Lilie, Alpinea etc. This will ensure steady income to farmers, create employment opportunities, promote Eco -Agro Tourism and Women empowerment through Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).
Under NHM scheme of Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), provision of subsidy is available for cut flower cultivations @ 50% limited to Rs 62,500/- per Ha in two instalments of 60:40 for an area upto 2 Ha on Pro- rata basis.
Market linkages are also being explored to connect Island produce with mainland markets and the tourism sector with in the Islands.
Farmers are requested to adopt Floriculture and get benefit from the emerging market demands for tropical flowers and showcasing the beauty of the Islands in National Markets.
An orientation programme in this context will be organised on 07/10/2025 at the Gram Panchayat Beodnabad to identify floriculture clusters.
