Coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Wildlife Week is celebrated from 2nd October to 8th October every year to create awareness among the people about the role of wildlife in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and to inculcate a culture of tolerance, understanding and compassion among the people for the wildlife.
The observance of this week serves as a reminder of the vital importance of wildlife conservation while inspiring empathy and responsibility among citizens towards safeguarding our natural heritage.
As we commemorate the 71st Wildlife Week in 2025, I urge our youth to embrace their role as ambassadors of nature and call upon local communities to continue their vital stewardship of both land and sea. Let us all uphold the principles of harmony, respect, and shared responsibility, in keeping with this year’s theme: ‘Human-Animal Co-existence.’
In the profound words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Let our islands embody this noble spirit and stand as a shining example for the world.
Together, let us strive to ensure that our rich biodiversity flourishes for generations to come, fostering a sustainable future where humans and wildlife coexist in harmony.
