
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 27: World Tourism Day celebration in Isles witnessed myriad activities organized by the Tourism Department, A&N Administration. As part of yesterday’s celebration, tourists were accorded a warm traditional welcome at VSI Airport, Shaheed Dweep, Swaraj Dweep and other parts of the Islands. Tourists were seen joining in the celebration with their sportive spirit. Major tourist destinations in Isles witnessed enthusiasm among visitors from various parts of the country.
Further, to enable tourists and visitors to have a glimpse of various interesting Museums in Isles located at National Memorial Cellular Jail, Chatham Saw Mill, Anthropological Museum, Samudrika Museum, Fisheries Museum, Zoological Survey of India, an entry free to these museums were enabled for all the visitors. Cleanliness drives were conducted at Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and other places by the Tourism Department.
As part of the celebration, the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Education Department, A&N Administration organized “Checkmate to Plastic” at New Wandoor Beach yesterday to mark World Tourism Day 2025. The initiative combined cleanliness and chess to spread awareness about sustainability in a unique way.
Around 100 enthusiastic school students under CRC Manglutan took part in the programme. The event began with a cleanliness drive in which the students actively cleaned the surroundings of the beach, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a plastic-free environment.
This was followed by a lively chess tournament in which nearly 80 students participated. The tournament was inaugurated by Smti. Deepa Nair, Principal, GSSS Manglutan, in the presence of Shri. Adir Das, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Wandoor, who graced the occasion as the guest of honour. In the closely contested event, P. Charvi secured the first position, while G. Naveen and B. Kunal claimed the second and third places respectively.
The winners were felicitated with trophies by the Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Wandoor. The initiative successfully blended environmental awareness with the game of chess, making the celebration of World Tourism Day both meaningful and memorable.
