Sri Vijayapuram, July 22: A 36-year-old man, Mr. Naval Kishore Bara, lost his life after a large, hollow tree collapsed onto his house during a sudden thunderstorm around 1:30 PM on July 20, 2025 at Anna Nagar village, located under the Hope Town Panchayat in South Andaman.
Addressing a press conference today, the Zilla Parishad Member of Wimberlygunj, Ms. Mariyam Bibi recounted the tragic events and highlighted the immediate community response. She said that upon receiving information about the accident, local PRI members, the Panchayat Pradhan, officials from the Bambooflat Tehsil, Forest Department, Fire Services, and local residents rushed to the spot. “We received a call that a massive tree had fallen on a house in Anna Nagar. Our teams responded quickly, and the villagers helped rescue the trapped wife and child. Unfortunately, Mr. Naval Kishore had already sustained critical injuries,” she told reporters.
Mr. Kishore was sitting outside after lunch when the tree fell, while his wife and toddler daughter were inside. A heavy branch struck his lower body, damaging his ribs and lungs. He was initially rushed to CHC Bambooflat, but due to the damaged bridge and delayed ferry service, transferring him to GB Pant Hospital was a challenge. However, with intervention from the Directorate of Shipping Services and Medical Control Room, an emergency boat was arranged to expedite the transfer.
Despite efforts by doctors at GB Pant Hospital, Mr. Kishore could not be saved. He was put on a ventilator in the Surgical ICU, but his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away late that evening. His SPO2 levels had dropped dangerously low, and a CT scan could not be conducted due to his unstable condition.
“This was a tragic and sudden loss. Naval Kishore was a healthy man, enjoying a peaceful moment with his family. No one could have imagined such devastation in seconds,” the Zilla Parishad Member said. “His wife, holding their young daughter, is inconsolable. The house is completely damaged. The family’s future is now uncertain.”
Following the incident, Panchayat Pradhan Ms. Rashida and PRI members submitted formal representations to the Lt. Governor, Chief Secretary, and Deputy Commissioner, demanding immediate compensation and long-term support for the affected family. Officials have assured that relief will be provided at the earliest, and efforts are being made to arrange a livelihood option for the widow, she added.
