Baratang, June 22: In a decisive move to address deteriorating road conditions in Baratang, Mr. Alager Swamy, the elected Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang, raised critical infrastructure concerns during the recently held District Planning Committee (DPC) meeting. His intervention has prompted immediate repair work on one of the region’s most problematic road stretches.
Mr. Swamy brought attention to the severely damaged road from Baratang Jetty to Arif Hotel, highlighting the dangers posed by deep potholes and neglected maintenance. The poor condition of the stretch has reportedly become a daily hazard for commuters, school-going children, and emergency services. Despite ongoing public complaints, no department had previously stepped forward to take responsibility for maintaining the road.
During the meeting, Mr. Swamy issued a stern warning, stating that if urgent action was not taken to fill the potholes—especially between Baratang Jetty and Adazig—he, along with other Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members and villagers, would be compelled to launch a Chakka Jaam (road blockade protest) as a mark of protest and to demand accountability from authorities.
Acknowledging the urgency, Mr. Swamy expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament, the Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad North & Middle, the Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman, and the CEO of Zilla Parishad for their swift support and response. As a result of the collective effort, repair work to fill the potholes began on the very evening of the meeting.
