Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 20: The Nature Club, J.N.R.M. and Science center, Sri Vijaya Puram Jointly Organises a Bird walk at Chidiya tapu (Helipad to Bada Balu Beach) to mark the World Sparrow Day. Every year 20th March is dedicated to raising awareness about the declining population of tiny house sparrow and other common birds. It is a reminder that you need to do everything in your power to save these small birds. However, you don’t need to do anything drastic to bring Gauraiya back, just a few small efforts in your everyday routine can help. We can invite them by growing greenery, put a bird house or simply give them little space in our houses for nesting, keep them hydrated by putting a shallow bowl don’t forget to fill it with fresh water every day, grow organic garden, provide them a handful of grains even leftover to feast them and more importantly talk about them, most people don’t even realize sparrows are disappearing. A simple conversation can make a difference. Before starting the walk Dr. Vivek Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor talked about Gauraiya and briefed the gathering about the bird watching as hobby, profession, conservation, and discussed ethics, do’s and don’ts of birding. Mr. Debasish Paul, Curator Science center, spokes on the avian diversity and Identification techniques. All together 40 students participated and observed 46 species of birds beside the other floral and faunal taxa. Avian fauna that is identified during walk includes ground and aerial birds, Shy and loud birds, wader birds, shore birds, resident/endemic and migratory birds, birds of prey, nocturnal birds domestic as well as wild birds.
