Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 26: At the call given by the central trade unions and Samyukta Kisan Morcha, workers and farmers all over the country today (26.11.2024) organised various programmes to protest against Modi government’s anti-worker and anti-farmer policies. In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, CITU has organised mass dharna and demonstrations throughout the islands.
At Port Blair, the CITU organised a mass dharna and public meeting at Tiranga Park, Aberdeen Bazar in which hundreds of workers from Port Blair town and rural South Andaman areas representing various unions attended the programme. Inaugurating the mass dharna, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU A & N State Committee criticized the central government for pursuing policies detrimental to the interests of working class. He briefly explained many of the demands on which the central trade unions and kisan organizations in the country are on agitation.
Addressing the massive gathering of workers, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU A & N State Committee elaborately explained each of the demands being highlighted during the programme and said that the Modi government has brought in four new labour codes, by abolishing 29 labour laws enacted for the welfare of the working class since British era, with a view to favour the corporate in the country. Expressing concern over the spiraling prices of food items in the country, Ayyappan said that when the BJP came to power in 2014, the prices of onion was Rs. 15 per Kilogram and after ten years of Modi rule, now the onion is being sold at Rs. 130 per kilogram in the islands and went on to say that people from lower strata are finding it difficult to pull on the days.
CITU State Secretaries P. Sathyapal, Anand Rajan and M. Yugander also addressed the gathering. R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU State Committee, who presided over the function, briefly explained the various anti-worker decisions taken by the A & N Administration over the years.
Similar programmes were organised at various outstations in the union territory.
